Ask most people what a ghost is and you’ll most likely receive the conventional response that they are the wandering souls of a human spirit, a deceased individual, a person, sometimes an animal; which makes a visual appearance to the living for reasons known or unknownDescriptions of the apparition will vary widely. It may be a barely visible wispy mist recognizable as human. It may appear translucent or solid, partial or full body, and very much life-like, and will often communicate with them directly. Manifestations can be anything from family to strangers, angels to demons, including harbingers (messengers) and animals (often deceased pets). Throughout history, people have deliberately attempted to conjure up spirits through mediums, usually a witch or sorcerer, that communicated with the deceased person. This was known as 'necromancy,' until spiritualists began practicing the 'séance' in the early 19th century. The belief in the manifestation of spirits is widespread, dating back to animism or ancestor worship in pre-literate cultures. Certain religious practices - funeral rites, exorcisms, and some early practices of spiritualism or ritualistic magic-were specifically designed to appease the spirits of the dead. Ghosts are generally described as solitary essences which haunt particular people, locations, or objects that were associated with the deceased in life. Throughout recorded history there are stories of phantom armies, ghost trains and ships, recounting good and evil. Plato, William Shakespeare, Edgar Allen Poe and Stephen King are a few names that come to mind for many people when asked who told the best ghost stories.
an·thro·po·mor·phic[an-thruh-puh-mawr-fik] adj.1.Ascribing human form or attributes to a being or thing not human, esp. to a deity.2.Resembling or made to resemble a human form: an anthropomorphic carving.
The anthropomorphic type personality is the 'anonymous' of the apparitions, who by definition, is the manifestation of an obvious human being whose identity usually remains unknown to both the witnesses and/or paranormal research investigators or historians. An example of such a personality might be that of a Revolutionary War soldier who regularly appears in the cellar of an eighteenth century era home built near a battlefield. Clearly human in nature and at times even appearing to be interactive, yet its identity remains anonymous mainly because it may never have been a resident of the place it is haunting and as such leaves no historical records that one might be able to use to place a name to the apparition. Often this type of apparition could be a 'wanderer.'Additionally, such entities can be among the most difficult to interact with, for unlike the consanguineous apparition (often referred to as the familiar)-who is here to comfort the grieving-or the chronicled (historical)-who consider themselves still a part of their environment-the anthropomorphic frequently appears to be angry, frightened or even confused, and often seems to be as afraid of those still living as the living are of them. While still capable of being documented and studied, they tend to be more difficult to get to 'come out and play'; however. That depends on whether they are benevolent or malevolent in nature in determining whether they make the best cases to study.
con·san·guin·e·ous [kon-sang-gwin-ee-uhs]adj.1.Having the same ancestry or descent; related by blood.
page 2 of 8:
Consanguineous apparitions are recognized family members or friends who have passed on are called consanguineous or familial personalities because they are intimately familiar to those that witness them. It could be a parent, a spouse, a child or a close friend, or someone otherwise known to the witness, and these are probably among the most common type of manifestation seen. Accounting for the vast majority of all sightings, consanguineous (familial) apparitions are the most common type of ghost that people experience. However, they're also the most short-lived type of manifestation as well. Although they are the most frequently experienced, it's usually only for a single visit to a selected family member. This is usually to the grieving spouse or parent, most probably as a means of bidding farewell or in an effort to comfort or reassure the bereaved that they are okay, and to put the mourners at ease regarding their passing. Unfortunately, the fact that they are not often seen or experienced repeatedly makes them among the most difficult to confirm or study. Of course, though it is uncommon, sometimes the consanguineous apparition will occur more than once shortly after death; in most instances, with a specific agenda in mind, and on occasion it will interact with those it (the spirit) is trying to comfort (the living). In rare cases, when someone refuses to let go, the ghost may linger, diminishing its manifestations, until that living family member has also made the decision to continue on with their life. And on rare occasions, it has been reported that years later, a family member or friend may receive a surprise visit by the deceased who has returned as a harbinger, usually warning of imminent danger to themselves or someone they love.
chron·i·cle [kron-i-kuhl]noun1. a chronological record of events; a history.
page 3 of 8:
One of the most fascinating and fairly common types of apparitions is that of the chronicled (historical) apparition. This can be an interactive personality, but is most probably only a residual recording of the historical event. The chronicled apparition can be roughly defined as the manifestation of a person not personally known to the witness, yet who may or may not be easily identifiable as that a known deceased individual or definitive era or period of time. For example, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln would most probably be recognized as on of the most famous historical characters of all time. One needn't be famous to be considered 'historical;' all that's required is that the person be identifiable as an individual or identifiable as the period in which they lived (e.g. - a civil war soldier in Gettysburg), even if their identity is never determined or discovered. Unlike consanguineous (familial) apparitions, chronicled apparitions are considered to be the most 'long-term' of all the manifestation types witnessed. They can often continue within a particular locality for years or even decades, and are seen by countless scores of witnesses over a considerable period of time. They are seen in many locations, such as battlefields, castles, or prisons.Because of this, they also are the most reliable and easiest to study. Most are easily recorded on film or within electronic voice phenomenon (E.V.P.) and make the best 'rookie ghosts' for those learning about the paranormal. as their longevity to some degree can be predictable. Yet, don't be disappointed as most chronicled apparitions are also only Incognitive residual recordings which replay over time under the right weather and geological conditions.
in·cog·ni·tive[in-kog-ni-tiv] adj.1.Not of or does not pertaining to cognition or awareness.2.Does not pertain to the mental processes of perception, memory, judgment, and reasoning, as contrasted with emotional and volitional human processes.
page 4 of 8:
The incognitive manifestation is the non-interactive personality of the types listed here. Also known as an 'imprint' or 'residual,' this type of manifestation may portray spirits in human form and mannerisms, it becomes obvious that the event usually repeats itself over and over again with no change, and appears as though the subject ghost is entirely oblivious to its surroundings. Furthermore, the most common characteristic that differentiates the incognitive personality type with the anthropomorphic interactive type-aside from this obvious lack of awareness of the living-is their tendency to repeat the same actions (such as walking down a set of stairs or sitting in on the edge of the same bed) as though they are actors in a play that is being acted out night and night again. Many who have encountered this type of apparition often describe it as being akin to watching a few frames of an old movie caught in a continuous loop. Efforts to communicate are futile as there is no real ghost to communicate with. The incognitive apparition is nothing more than a residual recording of a moment in time that has somehow been 'inscribed' or 'imprinted' into the environment and played back when the atmospheric conditions are right. In other words, these manifestation are not to be confused with disembodied personalities, but accepted as 'snapshots' that really are of a once living human being going about his or her daily activities which somehow have been recorded by the environment. This can include people in motion, music, footsteps, and sounds like children playing or a train passing...and only play out when conditions are ideal.
zoo·log·i·cal[zu-loji-kl], adj.1.Of or pertaining to zoology.2.Relating to or concerned with animals.
page 5 of 8:
Zoological Apparitions are not uncommon, since humans frequently form a very strong bond with their pets, so it's not remarkable then when the ghosts of those pets sometimes enter into the mix of apparitions. The question to ask is are these manifestations being produced by the conscious, free-will actions of the deceased pet-as it is assumed human based ghosts or personalities do-or are they being produced subconsciously by the pet's master. This is not to imply such encounters are hallucinations-though this may sometimes be the case-but that the human mind might hold the image of the beloved pet so tightly in its subconscious that it might be able to inadvertently manifest it under ideal conditions. The zoological apparition, then, is not the literal spirit of the dead animal, but a type of 'memory bubble' produced by the observer's own inherent but unconscious telekinetic energy. In other words, is it the owner's love for their pet that keeps the pet's spirit alive? Animals do seem to possess a basic consciousness and may attach themselves to physical places in the same way some humans do; the manifestations. Thus it may be temporary residual energy bursts unconsciously created by even the most primitive animal consciousness for a brief period of time, and one that lasts only until the basic energy of the creature fades and winks out of existence. On the other hand, since most animal manifestations are of higher order animals such as dogs, cats, and horses, it's entirely possible that even low-levels of consciousness might actually have the capability of surviving death just as humans seem to be able to do. Many who have experienced their dead pet's presence agree that the possibility should be considered.
id·i·o·syn·crat·ic [id-e-o-singkr -at-ik], noun1.A characteristic, habit, mannerism, or the like, that is peculiar to an individual.2.The physical constitution peculiar to an individual.3.A peculiarity of the physical or the mental constitution, esp. susceptibility toward drugs, food, etc.
page 6 of 8:
The idiosyncratic apparition is probably the most difficult to identify. It is often associated with beings that have never been human, never had a body, and have never lived, let alone died. Throughout history all over the world, legends have been told about and religions have been built upon those entities unborn. They are benevolent and malevolent, adding fodder for religious tales of angels and demons. Many have names that are easily recognizable in all religions around the world, and are blamed for targeting the living with possession. These idiosyncratic apparitions appear to be entities unknown, yet familiar and are able to disguise themselves as to who or what they really are when communicating with the living as a spirit or ghost. Legendary creatures throughout history have been embellished from the idiosyncratic manifestations. These creatures include the leprechaun, elves, poltergeists (thought to be playful children until they're aggravated), vampires, zombies and werewolves. Although extremely rare, the most frightening of the idiosyncratic apparitions are the 'elementals.' They are called so because these spirits use the elements in nature to wreck havoc, death and destruction in their path and favor a specific element, inherent in their nature; air, fire, wind, water and earth. Many cultures blame the tsunamis, earthquakes, tornadoes, and the like on these apparitions. Usually they affect hundreds, if not thousands. But on rare occasion, they will appear as a singe entity, and one surely to be reckoned with..
ex·tra·ce·les·tial[s leschl], adj.1.Possibly pertaining to a different dimension, visible heaven, realm.2.Possibly pertaining to the spiritual or invisible heaven; heavenly; divine: not of this earth.3.Or pertaining to celestial body outside the solar system or galactic plain.
page 7 of 8:
The extra-celestial apparition is not only interactive and apparently intelligent, but, like the anthropomorphic personality, it also frequently manifests deep emotions and often seems to be 'on a mission.' The only difference between it and the anthropomorphic personality is that this ghost does not appear to be of a human origin.Extra-celestials are distinguished from the other types of apparitions in that they are markedly different in the way they interact with the living when compared to a known human spirit: yet personalities tend to do and say very human things. Extra-celestials operate at a different level. In that they tend to be spiritual masters or teachers dispensing tremendous wisdom. Possibly, they show what can be described as an angelic trait, willing and able to intervene in human affairs. These types of manifestation are also extremely difficult to document, as they normally interact in a more subtle manner than the other personalities do. For instance, they rarely appear to the naked eye (though some mediums claim to be able to see them) preferring instead to work behind the scenes. Often they act as guides for lost or confused souls that are still caught in this earthly plain, as overseers of the spiritual realm sent to keep order. Just as there are malevolent human souls to contend with, there are those malevolent extra-celestials as well. Think about it for a second; Could it be possible that these entities are the foundation for the human demon mythologies inherent in most religions?
liv·ing[living], adj.1.Pertaining to a near-death person, possibly coma patients, out-of-body (OBE) traveler. An example; still alive, not yet dead: very much a living, breathing, human person.Living Apparition
page 8 of 8:
Though extremely rare, there are accounts of people encountering ghostly manifestations of a person-usually well known to them-who is still alive, although at another, usually distant, physical location, The living apparition usually appears at a time when the person whose ghost is manifesting is in great distress or danger. An example could be a pilot flying through a terrible storm who suddenly appears hundreds of miles away in his home, as if his spirit or soul has left the body and gone to a safe place, possibly to warn a loved one that he is in peril. These manifestations come completely unexpectedly, which makes them impossible to stud. They exist purely as anecdotal stories. However, a more common phenomenon of the living ghost apparition is when the soul of a living person whose mortality is imminent, suddenly appears as a manifestation to a family member or friend, minutes or hours before the precise hour of their death. Say, for example, the person is suddenly awakened from a deep sleep to observe a parent or friend who is in a coma at a hospital, sitting at the foot of his or her bed. This type of apparition and phenomenon is reported frequently in hospitals and emergency rooms throughout the world. Though surprising, it's not uncommon to caregivers. Unfortunately, such phenomenon is exceedingly rare and difficult to investigate; however, it does suggest that there exists a strong link between loved ones that transcends distance and death..
